Wood Screw Types: A Technical Guide for Furniture and Joinery Applications

Working with wood requires selecting the correct fastener for the material and application. Wood screws—also called furniture screws—are primarily used for indoor furniture, cabinetry, and occasional outdoor projects. This guide classifies them by head shape, drive type, and thread pattern.

Classification by Head Shape

  • Pan Head Screws: Resemble an inverted pan with a flat bottom. Ideal for attaching metal to wood, such as sheet metal to wooden frames. The head sits on the surface; for a flush finish, drill a counterbore.

  • Flat Head (Countersunk/CSK) Screws: Cone-shaped underside with a flat top. Sinks flush into wood, perfect for wood-to-wood joining (bookshelves, cabinets, stair treads). Can be sanded, puttied, or painted for a concealed finish.

  • Washer Head Screws: Rounded head with an integrated washer that distributes load evenly. Used in pocket hole joinery and framing, especially when joining multiple boards or attaching two pieces of wood.

Classification by Drive Type

  • Cross-head Screws: Cross-shaped recess. Smooth to drive, easy to remove, widely available. Suitable for general furniture assembly.

  • Star Drive Screws: Six-pointed star recess. High torque capacity, does not cam out. Reliable for machine-driven applications and load-bearing joints.

  • Square Drive Screws: Square recess. Reduces slipping during installation. Suitable for DIY projects and angle joinery, though grip strength is lower than star drive.

  • Slotted Screws: Single straight slot. Basic design, manually operated. Prone to slipping; used for light-duty applications like switch plates.

Classification by Thread Pattern (Wood Type)

  • Hardwood Screws: More threads per inch. Provides firm grip without splitting dense wood fibres. Ensures secure joinery in oak, beech, or ash.

  • Softwood Screws: Fewer threads per inch. Prevents tearing of soft fibres in pine, spruce, or cedar. Avoids oversized holes and loose joints.

Selection Checklist
Before specifying wood screws, consider:

  1. Wood type (hardwood vs. softwood)

  2. Application (visible joinery, structural framing, or metal attachment)

  3. Installation tool (manual vs. power driver)

Tianyu supplies a full range of wood screws in stainless steel and mild steel, with various head and drive configurations suitable for European furniture manufacturing and joinery applications.
